Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) - Advisory Notes for Farmers (PB9445)
BSE was first confirmed in 1986 in the UK and was made a notifiable disease in June 1988. There have been over 180,000 cases to date. Although the disease is declining rapidly, it is crucial that all animals showing signs of BSE are reported. These notes explain what you should do if you think you have a BSE suspect. Defra, PB9445, October 2006.
Deer - TSE Advice for Farmers (PB9444)
The BSE epidemic in cattle is in decline but it is possible that a TSE could occur in another species in the UK. This DEFRA leaflet describes what signs to look for and what to do if you suspect the possible presence of a TSE in your deer herd. Defra, PB9444, 2004.
Feed Controls in the TSE Regulations - Guidance Notes
This guidance note explains the feed controls in Article 7 and Annex IV of Regulation (EC) No.999/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council as amended. The controls are administered in England by the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (England) Regulations 2008; in Wales by the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (Wales) Regulations 2008 and in Scotland by the Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies (Scotland) Regulations 2006. This note is intended to be used as guidance for industry on the requirements of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE)-related feed ban as it affects the manufacture, storage, transport and use of animal feedingstuffs, and for those with enforcement responsibilities for the feed ban in Great Britain. Enforcement authorities may wish to use this guidance to co-ordinate policy at a local level.Defra, SEERAD & Welsh Assembly, 2001 & 2009.
