Barley growth guide (Winter 2005/06)
This HGCA barley growth guide summarises data 'benchmarks' for each facet of barley development through the growing season. Thus it provides a detailed guide to management techniques to improve the performance of barley crops. HGCA & SEERAD, Winter 2005/06.
Blackgrass management in organic systems
This is a short leaflet outlining the nature of blackgrass problems, general biology, prevention and control. It is an output from a Defra research project on the topic. Published by HDRA, 2005.
Borage - Crop Factsheet
Borage has been grown in the UK for a number of years as a high value, speciality oil crop. Similar to Evening Primrose, Borage is recognised as a key source of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is commonly used in personal care products and nutraceuticals. NNFCC, 2006
Crambe - Crop Factsheet
Crambe (more commonly known as Abyssinian mustard) is an annual spring sown herb from the mustard family originating from the Mediterranean regions. Crambe has been grown successfully for industrial use in North America for a number of years and more recently has proved to be successful in the UK as an alternative oil crop. NNFCC, 2006
Crop Establishment - A Management Guide
This document has been produced by the Soil Management Initiative and provides guidelines for the progressive adoption of improved cultivation practices whether plough-based or reduced cultivation. It aims to improve soil management, reduce input costs and protect both profitability and the environment. It is a practical, informed tool for farmers, advisors and the farming industry. 2005 version as HTML, 2000 version as pdf. Soil Management Initiative, 2005.
Environmental impact of cereals and oilseed rape for food and biofuels in the UK
HGCA commissioned the Central Science Laboratory to review the current environmental effects of growing cereals and oilseed rape and assess how these may change when growing for biofuel markets. The review concludes that biofuel cropping can make a positive contribution to the environment. Biofuel production can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels, meet EU biofuel targets, cut greenhouse gas emissions and provide alternative markets for farmers. This leaflet provides a brief overview of Research Review 54 available from HGCA. It introduces the complex processes and interactions involved for policy makers, growers and others engaged in the biofuel debate. HGCA, Spring 2005.
Hemp - Crop Factsheet
Hemp is grown widely as a fibre crop in Europe and is now also an established minor crop in the UK. The crop may be grown for both its fi bre and oil. NNFCC, 2006.
HGCA Recommended List 2006/07 for cereals and oilseeds
HGCA Recommended Lists are run by Crop Evaluation Ltd, an independent company owned by HGCA and managed by all stakeholders involved in the Lists. Varieties are added to the Lists when they are considered to have the potential to provide a consistent economic benefit to the whole industry. Eleven new varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists for 2006/07, while thirteen have been removed. HGCA, 2006.
HGCA Topic Sheets Index
A chronological index to HGCAs Topic Sheets.
Integrated Crop Management (CPA Book)
This booklet was produced by the CPA in 1996. In contains detailed, sound, practical guidance on Integrated Crop Management. It should be noted that some guidance is now out of date or about to be replaced with new regulations particularly with respect to waste management. Crop Protection Association (CPA), 1996.
Integrated Crop Management (CPA Leaflet)
This leaflet is a summary of the book of the same name produced by the CPA in 1996. In contains detailed, sound, practical guidance on Integrated Crop Management.
Integrated Pest Management
This brochure looks at the principles and strategies of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and explains how elements of IPM can be adopted at local level by the farmer depending on local conditions and the role of crop protection and biotechnology products. CropLife International, 2003.
Minimum Tillage
Interest in non-ploughing tillage systems has increased in Europe because of the need to reduce costs, to establish winter crops timeously and because of perceived environmental benefits. However, the main objective of the use of non-ploughing tillage is to reduce the costs of production whilst maintaining or increasing yields. This leaflet provides guidelines for success. SAC, TN553, 2003.
Miscanthus - Crop Factsheet
Miscanthus has been grown in the UK for a number of years, primarily as an energy crop. The crop may be used to generate heat in biomass based systems or for co-fi ring in power generation. NNFCC, 2006.
