Biodiversity and Conservation (POST Note 144)
The passage of the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill has focussed parliamentary interest on protecting wildlife. This briefing note examines the basis for nature conservation and the role and application of science, and discusses the issues raised. Biofuels: The EU Strategy on Biofuels: from field to fuel. Volume I: Report (267-I)
This report considers whether the EU Biofuels Directive is proving effective as a means of increasing the biofuels content of road transport energy. The report covers production from field to fuel, stimulating demand, economic factors for success, justification for biofuels, importation, building domestic biofuel industries, and recommendations for the future. Biomass Task Force Report and Government Responses
Two reports regarding the Biomass Taskforce and then the Governments response. The challenge set for the Task Force was to make proposals to optimise the contribution of biomass to a range of targets and policies set by the Government. The report states that the potential of biomass is significant and could make a real contribution to the climate change agenda. The Taskforce report looks at the background of biomass providing pertinent recommendations to Government regarding biomass deliverables, strategy, and cost. The Government's response to the Taskforce report includes comments regarding the recommendations made, outlining further action to be taken, if any. Waste Not, Want Not - A strategy for Tackling the Waste Problem in England
The UK produces enough waste in one hour to fill the Albert Hall. Household waste is a particular problem. The quantity produced is rising by 3% per year and will double by 2020 adding 1.6bn per year to waste disposal costs. This document describes the strategy for tackling this problem in England.
